Justin McKenzie – Executive Director & Founder
Justin McKenzie is the founder and Executive Director of Bravelight Youth Services, where he leads with both lived experience and a deep commitment to culturally informed, relationship-based care.
Born and raised in Prince George until the age of 13, Justin’s early years were shaped by significant transitions. At 15, he began living independently and eventually became transient, couch surfing and navigating life on his own. During this time, he was embraced by a Secwépemc (Shuswap) family, an Indigenous Nation whose traditional territory spans the Interior of British Columbia. His best friend Eagle became his brother, and Eagle’s parents became his own. They welcomed Justin into their home and lives, adopting him as one of their own. The family remains a vital part of his life today. Through them, Justin learned traditional teachings and practices that continue to guide his personal life and professional values.
Having experienced both instability and the power of true belonging, Justin holds a special place in his heart for Indigenous youth and others navigating the complexities of the care system. His journey—both personal and professional—drives his passion for creating spaces where youth are safe, respected, and given the opportunity to thrive.
Justin was also profoundly influenced by his mother’s long career in social work. Her dedication—and her choice to give him the freedom to find his own way—inspired him to pursue youth care, blending system knowledge with lived experience to create meaningful change.
Today, Justin brings a unique blend of leadership, cultural grounding, and lived experience to Bravelight’s mission, ensuring that young people are not only supported—but genuinely seen and valued.
